Marketing Campaigns and SMART Goals

What is the difference between goals, strategies, and tactics?

The fundamentals of achieving success often depend on an individual’s planning and execution of essential steps. Goal setting forms the foundation for the entire process of success pursuit. Goals usually entail the objects fueling one’s ambition and efforts, and an aim or some desired results represent them. Goals may occur in the form of explicit statements that guide an individual in different activities and practices, all in the struggle of attaining something, the goals.

Strategies, on the other hand, represent crucial aspects of the pursuit of different goals. They involve a set of carefully tailored and essential execution steps relevant to the attainment of both long-term and short-term goals. It is crucial to keep in mind that the strategies depend on the goals, and the success depends on the execution of the strategies, including decision-making and operational activities among others.

Lastly, tactics entail the specific strategies or actions employed to achieve the desired result. They are the actual means through which objectives become attainable.

What is the importance of setting SMART goals when creating a marketing campaign? What questions should be considered?

Failure in business and other activities is often due to entities pursuing unrealistic or vague goals. It is significantly necessary to set SMART goals on any occasion, for they ensure that success is “specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely” (Smart Goal, n.d., para. 1). Fundamentally, applying SMART goals is an effective strategy of pushing one onto the right path, providing a sense of direction, and aiding in the organization and attainment of set objectives.

The setting of SMART goals requires the consideration of the following questions:

SMART Goal – Specific

  1. Who is involved in the goal?
  2. What is the objective or needed accomplishment?
  3. Where will the objective be accomplished?
  4. When should the goal be achieved?
  5. Why is the goal necessary/essential?

SMART Goal – Measurable

  1. How many/much?
  2. How will one know that the goal is achieved?
  3. What are the indicators of the progress?

SMART Goal – Achievable

  1. Are the resources along with capabilities needed for achieving the goal available?
  2. Has the goal been achieved successfully by others in the past?

SMART Goal – Realistic

  1. Is the objective pragmatic and within reach?
  2. Is the goal attainable using the available time as well as resources?

SMART Goal – Timely

  1. Do the goals have a time limit?
  2. What is the time frame for attaining the goals?

Provide examples to portray how marketing tactics align to strategies in order to support set goals.

Proper alignment of goals, strategies, and tactics ensures that an organization achieves its desired results effectively. The goals come first, and the strategies and tactics come next to support the pursuit of those goals (How to Achieve Alignment through Clear Strategies and Tactics, n.d.). Nevertheless, other activities within the organization should be ongoing concurrently for success to prevail.

For example, launching a new product may be the organizational goal. The tactics may involve conducting market surveys for the identification of the target audience. Apart from that, the organization can reach customers by sending emails, holding trade shows, and the use of social media websites (How to Achieve Alignment through Clear Strategies and Tactics, n.d.). The strategy can include aspects such as coming up with the right product, testing the markets, acquiring consumer feedback, and making proper advertising.

Aligning all these concepts appropriately is the key to achieving success.

How can you ensure that your SMART goals are met using key performance indicators (KPIs)? Explain using examples to support your rationale.

Conducting regular reviews on the KPIs is one way of ensuring that the SMART goals are met. The reviews may occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, depending on the size of the company. Besides, the KPIs can be evolved to ensure that they fit the changing needs of the business. Moreover, the KPIs can be updated as needed, thus ensuring their efficiency.

A good example is a goal of attracting more customers to an organization. The number of new clients can be measured daily at the close of each business day. The reflecting information will indicate whether the goal is being attained or not. Besides, a goal involving growing the organization’s revenue may be measured monthly for the establishment of the trend.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
